| 'It is possible I have breathed the breath that your great, great, grandfather breathed, and perhaps your grandchild will breath the breath I am breathing now'
'I come from a long line of dead people - who lie sleeping underground - whose souls turn to roots, leaves, and rock' There are many crucial passages in life ranging from one physical or emotional state to another, from the physical to the spiritual, and ultimately from this life to the next. These statements are intended to remind us of our inherent primal condition and the inevitable "passage" we all must face. The symbols and archetypal imagery in my work speak metaphorically about man's separation from the natural forces that surround us while addressing the loss of cultural ties once affirmed through the use of myth and ritual. I utilize elemental materials that reveal the primal forces of growth/change, creation/destruction, and life/death. These sculptures can be viewed as vessels or carriers of metaphysical meaning, which foster contemplation and a reconsideration of the worldly values to which we now subscribe. |
